Blender´s EEVEE memes – Why Open Source 3D is good choice in 2018?

3D Animation Open source is now even better with Blender 3D. In January 2018, the Blender Foundation (BF) started a global funding project called CODE QUEST. When you contribute to this campaign, you´re helping the coders gather together at the BF in Amsterdam to finish the changes on the next 2.8 version of Blender. A question pops up: Why is open source 3D a good choice in 2018? Simple answer: Top AAA+ realtime graphics in Blender 3D.

Open source software has been making a very strong presence since last year. Open Source projects like Krita (painting application with lots of great features) are rivaling some competitors out on the market. Some visual creation studios in the world are searching for technical assistance to migrate their current pipelines to pilot every aspect of production via Open Source tools in video, digital painting and animation. VFX post houses are combining hybrid solutions (propietary applications and open source applications) to deliver their production. Studios like Barnstorm believe it is possible to develop high end graphics and vfx for cinema with Blender, get details here.

There are other staggering break downs in Blender, like the short film “SAURORA”

So here are the targets the campaign of CODE QUEST is aiming for:

  • Blender 2.80 (beta) release Q3 2018.
  • Blender “101”, simple configuration for occasional users.
  • Quality Assurance: define a protocol for better testing.
  • Launch event at SIGGRAPH in Vancouver (August 14-16). A small representative booth at the trade-show will be rented.

In case you don´t know what EEVEE is, you can check the official Blender F.A.Q. by visiting this link. But in addtion, here´s the good news: You will not have to wait long for your renders on Blender 2.8 since a special real time graphics engine will be available for you and your marvelous creations in 3D space.

In case all of this sounds too complex, let the MEMEs explain it!

Twitter of vfx meme
Blender´s render engine EEVEE is so advance, the users are expecting to make contact now.

In the Arrival (2016) movie, a scientist is trying to contact alien life, through a new language. You may want to check the trailer and get the sense of the post. The good news is that all materials in Blender´s internal render “Cycles” will also be supported with realtime materials. One shader-language to rule them all. No translation needed.

When light setup and render is a thing of the past.

Eevee arsenal includes contact shadow, bloom, sub surface scatter, volumetric shadow and lights, reflection probes, reflection planes, and many other *new* implementations. Get to read the details in eevee´s roadmap here.

One doesn´t simply uses realtime reflection probes.

On any realtime scene you can capture light rays and object reflections faster by using an orb that can write 360º light vectors onto all the other objects in the scene. This way you get a sense of continuity in color between spaces. Plain English: shiny things look good.

Maya users wait for render and crashes
We all know how it feels to complete a deadline with a crashed render.

I think we all know the feeling: Having to render long hours on many machines over to the next morning, and find the render crashed after frame 12. Before a meeting with a client. On Saturday. At 9 am. You´ve just arrived to the crime scene and the machines didn´t even processed the AOVs. Eevee may just spare you the pain.

cpu+gpu render, render hybrid, 3d render
To find out the speed of renders will go as fast as you´ve ever dreamed on Blender 3D

Maybe you´ve seen the movie Thor Ragnarok from Marvel Studios. This was an EPIC moment of the movie since no one expected this reaction from Thor. It´s the same feeling when you have a GTX, or superior Nvidia graphics card and go to your user preferences (CTRL+ALT+U) on Blender 2.79a, on System tab you´ll find a little surprise (name of your graphic card may vary):

Ok (Hella thorns): This is how some of the softwares out there make us feel like when we get used to frequent render crashes and work-arounds. Crashing a scene because of a shader? Corrupt model links break because of a mid-saved asset? We´ve all been there.

So, the list could go on and on. But I´m pretty sure you now get a better idea of why Open Source 3D Software is a good choice on 2018 with Blender 2.8´s eevee real time engine.

I hope you´ve enjoyed this post. Share it with your socials and let me know what do you think are the weaks and strong points in the up comming version of Blender 2.8.

Disclaimer: Some memes are produced with a certain branded logo. While the choices were broad, the appeal in a meme graphic should reach for the one most commonly recognized by culture (in this case CGI culture) so it´s nothing personal. All logos correspond to their respective creators. I claim no ownership of any of the logos posted here. This is a general exemplification post.

Update *September  21st*

After Annecy (Animation Market Circuit) and Siggraph, it looks like some people are finding hard to believe that regardless EEVEE uses OGL 3.3 (very old) as minimum to run at MAX performance (benefiting most users with low end graphics cards), EEVEE can really perform with amazing results as a real time engine for 2D and 3D all in the same Blender package installer!
